The dishwasher is one of the most underserviced appliances in the home. People assume that because it washes with hot water and detergent, it cleans itself. It doesn't. Without regular maintenance, a dishwasher becomes a machine that recirculates contaminated water over your dishes, slowly destroys its own pump, and leaks silently into the floor beneath your kitchen cabinets.
The dishwasher's circulation pump pushes water through the spray arms at high pressure. When the lower filter is clogged with food debris, the pump has to work against increased resistance — like trying to breathe through a blocked airway. The motor overheats, the bearings wear, and eventually the pump seizes. This is one of the most expensive dishwasher repairs and one of the most easily prevented.
THE FILTER NOBODY CLEANS — AND WHAT IT COSTS THEM
At the bottom of your dishwasher, beneath the lower spray arm, there is a cylindrical filter assembly. It catches food particles, labels from glass jars, seeds, and debris to prevent them from being recirculated onto your "clean" dishes and from reaching the pump. On most modern dishwashers, this filter requires manual cleaning.
Older dishwashers had a self-cleaning grinder. Modern ones are quieter because they use a manual filter instead — and the trade-off is that you need to clean it. Most owners discover this for the first time when their dishwasher starts leaving food on dishes, or when a technician tells them why the pump failed.
TU RUTINA MENSUAL
-
01Saca y limpia el conjunto del filtro inferior mensualmenteTwist the cylindrical filter counterclockwise and lift it out, along with the flat mesh filter underneath. Rinse both under warm running water, using a soft brush to remove stuck particles. Soak in warm soapy water for 5 minutes if there's heavy buildup. Reinstall firmly — a loose filter allows debris to bypass directly into the pump. In South Florida's hard water environment, rinse with a diluted vinegar solution monthly to prevent mineral scale.

02Realiza un ciclo de limpieza mensual con vinagre blancoPlace a dishwasher-safe cup filled with white vinegar on the top rack and run a full hot cycle with no detergent. The vinegar dissolves grease deposits, mineral scale, and bacterial biofilm from the interior walls, spray arm holes, and internal hoses. Follow this with a second short cycle sprinkled with baking soda on the floor of the tub to neutralize odors and remove any remaining residue.
-
03Inspecciona los agujeros de los brazos rociadores por obstrucciones de mineralesRemove the upper and lower spray arms (they typically unscrew counterclockwise) and hold them up to the light. Each small hole should be clear and open. Blocked holes mean water jets at reduced pressure or wrong angles — some dishes get no coverage at all. Use a toothpick or thin wire to clear individual holes, then rinse thoroughly before reinstalling.
-
04Inspecciona el sello de puerta cada 3 mesesRun your finger along the entire rubber seal around the dishwasher door. It should be flexible, continuous, and firmly seated. Hardened sections, cracks, or missing segments allow water to seep out during cycles. A leaking door gasket is particularly damaging because the water flows down the front panel and soaks into the cabinet base and flooring — often going unnoticed for months. Replacement gaskets are $20–$40 and install without tools.
-
05Raspa los platos antes de cargar — no pre-enjuaguesContrary to habit, pre-rinsing dishes is actually counterproductive — modern dishwashers need some food particles to calibrate the soil sensor correctly. But scraping large food pieces off the plate before loading significantly reduces filter clogging. Labels and stickers on jars are a major source of filter debris and spray arm blockages — always remove them before washing.
Hallandale Beach y el condado de Broward tienen agua notablemente dura — high calcium and magnesium content. This accelerates scale buildup inside your dishwasher faster than in most US cities. Use a rinse aid consistently, add a dishwasher cleaner with citric acid quarterly, and consider a water softener if you're seeing heavy white deposits on glassware after every cycle. Scale buildup inside the heating element is a leading cause of dishwasher failure in our area.
